OT/PT Class of 2021 New Student Page

Welcome to the OT/PT Class of 2021

New Student Page!

Below you will find information and due dates to help you prepare to join us in June. We will continue to update and add information to this page, so check it often!

General Information (deadlines follow below)

Join our Facebook Group!
□ Get to know your fellow admitted OT & PT classmates! Find roommates! You should have received our invitation to join this private group (if you did not, please let us know).

Provide Social Security Number
□ All students must contact Nancy Hanna and provide your social security number by phone to keep this information secure. This information is needed to set up your Mary Baldwin accounts (including student email account). Her phone number is 540.887.4380. Remember – protect your information – do not provide by email or voicemail.

E-mail Accounts
□ Mary Baldwin University Personal Identification Number (PIN) and username will be mailed to you. Please allow a week for this information to be processed. If you have not received it, you can get the PIN information by calling our IT Help Line at 540.887.7075. Let them know you are an incoming OT or PT student and need credentials to activate your MBU email.

Reference that paper while you complete the following steps:
1. Access your Mary Baldwin email online at: https://myaccount.google.com/
2. To log in, enter your Mary Baldwin username (the username on your PIN letter plus “@marybaldwin.edu“) and your PIN as your password.
3. Click on the “Sign In” button.
4. If you have a personal Gmail account, you may need to log out of that account before you can log in to your marybaldwin.edu account.

All electronic correspondence from the college will be sent to your Mary Baldwin email address, so it is important to make a habit of checking your Mary Baldwin email on a regular basis. Mary Baldwin email uses the powerful Google Gmail engine. You can forward your Mary Baldwin email account to another account for your convenience.

Laptop required
□ All students must supply a laptop computer for their use in classes. Computer-based learning materials and exams will be used as part of the curriculum. See link to MDCHS Laptop Requirements. Although Mary Baldwin does not sell computers, most manufacturers offer discounts to students. Let them know you are a Mary Baldwin University student. Your laptop is required at orientation with all required programs loaded and functional.

File your FAFSA
□ Complete your FAFSA at www.fafsa.ed.gov. The FAFSA School Code for Mary Baldwin is 003723. If you have any questions about the process, feel free to give Robin Dietrich, Director of Financial Aid, a call at 540.887.7025 or 1.800.468.2262. OT and PT students seeking financial aid will need to complete TWO FAFSA applications (one to cover first summer semester, and one to cover following year). See FA Info 18-19 MDCHS Brochure for timing, deadlines, and school code.

□ Questions? Contact Megan Speth in Financial Aid at mspeth@marybaldwin.edu or 540.887.7323.

Car
□ You will need to plan to bring transportation with you when you arrive. Because public transportation is limited, you will need reliable transportation for daily commute as well as for clinical assignments and community practicums.

Housing
□ We recommend that students find housing locally – the closest communities are Fishersville, Staunton, Waynesboro and Stuarts Draft. We have provided some information to get you started on the search for your new home, which we have confirmed will welcome students, and, we will continue to add to this list. See Housing Links for more information.

Books
□ Mary Baldwin University’s online bookstore offers students the ability to order books in all formats available for that text (new, used, rent, e-book) at competitive prices. Books can be ordered at the Mary Baldwin Online Bookstore or any bookseller once the booklist is available. Our professors will note, when possible, when books may be rented, or, if they need to be purchased (and likely use them for another class). Professors will also offer free e-book options when available. Click here for the booklist.

Employment
□ Due to the rigor of the graduate programs, students are strongly advised against employment while enrolled in the program. No time will be granted for students to seek or maintain employment. Employment while enrolled in the program may lead to poor academic performance and failure and should not be pursued.

Fitness Center Student Memberships
□ Augusta Health Lifetime Fitness is offering MDCHS students the opportunity to meet their fitness needs while in our programs with a very special rate offered exclusively to MDCHS students.
MDCHS student rate: $21/month* for Total Fitness Membership. Enrollment fee will be waived. Family members can enroll at the regular membership rates. For more information about the facility and benefits of membership, visit their website at http://www.augustahealth.com/lifetime-fitness
In order to enroll, you will need to stop by the membership office to complete an application form and receive a membership card. You will need a credit card or debit card to authorize direct payments.
*Note: There is a yearly contract required, but, they will offer flexibility to end before the term if clinical assignments take you outside the area. This is a special rate for MDCHS students – please keep it confidential.

Health Insurance
All students are required to have health insurance coverage by start of the program to be ready for clinical fieldwork.

Mary Baldwin University offers a student health insurance option with a Hard Waiver Process. Students are not required to enroll in the student health insurance plan, however, enrolling is one means to meet the health insurance requirement. Students are encouraged to compare the MBU plan against other options, such as being a dependent on a parent’s health insurance plan, or having individual coverage through an ACA/Health Exchange plan.

The Student Health Insurance premium will be added to all eligible student’s University accounts. Students who already have coverage through a private insurance plan must complete an online waiver process to opt out. Once the waiver is verified and approved, your student account will be credited.

Students who do not waive (decline) the insurance will be automatically enrolled in the school-sponsored plan.

MDCHS is changing providers and will have more information soon. Our new provider includes additional benefits at a cost under comparable ACA plans in Virginia.

Students are responsible for all healthcare costs while enrolled in programs at MDCHS.

More information about the student health plan will be available here soon.

Immunizations/Health Records
□ Newly enrolled students MUST undergo a two-step Turberculin skin test (TST) OR have 1 Inteferon Gamma Release Assay Test (IGRA) blood test for individuals who have had the BCG vaccine. A 2-step TST will require 4 visits and must be performed in the US. Plan for annual tuberculosis testing thereafter per program requirements. More info: www.cdc.gov/tb/topic/testing/healthcareworkers.htm

□ Two-Step TST must be done at least 7 days apart but no more than 30 days between first and second TST placement or series must be repeated.
