Staunton Resident Named Sam M. Walton Fellow

July 9, 1999

Dr. Phil Sturm, assistant professor of marketing communications at Mary Baldwin University, was recently named a Sam M. Walton Free Enterprise Fellow by the Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) Headquarters.

SIFE, an organization of approximately 600 colleges, provides college students the opportunity to make a difference and to develop leadership, teamwork, and communication skills through learning, practicing, and teaching the principles of free enterprise.

Each year, SIFE headquarters builds teams on college and university campuses by recruiting a faculty advisor who understands free enterprise and has the desire to inspire students. Dr. Sturm, who serves as the faculty advisor to Mary Baldwin’s SIFE, developed a team at Mary Baldwin and provided counseling throughout the year to help the group conduct outreach programs and compete in regional and international competitions.

Upon completion of their SIFE team’s first regional competition, faculty advisors are designated Sam M. Walton Fellows (in memory of Sam Walton, entrepreneur and founder of WalMart Stores, Inc.).

Dr. Sturm’s role as a Sam Walton fellow is to serve as the students’ mentor, helping to make classroom lessons come to life through SIFE projects and to help students leave a lasting mark on Mary Baldwin, the Staunton community, and their country.

In mid-May, Dr. Sturm and the Mary Baldwin SIFE team traveled to the 1999 Hallmark Cards/Students in Free Enterprise International Conference and Career Opportunity Fair in Kansas City, Missouri. There the team was one of several teams named Rookie of the Year, a titled bestowed upon those SIFE teams considered to be in the top 10% of the newly organized chapters.

Dr. Sturm is a member of the 1999 Staunton Augusta County Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors, serving as a division vice-chair. A member of the Mary Baldwin faculty since 1996, Dr. Sturm has provided marketing consulting services to firms such as R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co., Coca-Cola, and Johnson and Johnson; as well as publishing articles in a number of academic journals.
