Shakespeare Expert to Speak at Mary Baldwin

October 19, 1999

Patrick Spottiswood, director of education for the Shakespeare Globe Theatre in London, will give a free public lecture at Mary Baldwin University on Monday, October 25, 1999 at 7:00 p.m. in Hunt Lounge.

Spottiswood will speak on “Shakespeare’s Globe.” He is a friend and supporter of Shenandoah Shakespeare Express (SSE) who has plans to build a replica of the Globe in downtown Staunton.

The original Globe opened in 1599, burned down in 1613, and was immediately rebuilt. Closed in 1642 by the Puritans, the Globe Theatre is again open to the public. Now, 200 yards from its original site and almost 400 years later, the rebuilt playhouse was officially inaugurated in June 1997. Every summer it features performances of plays by Shakespeare and his contemporaries.
