The Mary Baldwin University Theatre presents The Miss Firecracker Contest, a play by Beth Henley, Wednesday, October 2, through Saturday, October 5, at 8 p.m., and Sunday, October 6, at 2 p.m. in the Fletcher Collins Theatre, Deming Hall.
Carnelle Williams, known locally as Miss Hot Tamale, is trying to win the Miss Firecracker Contest and put her reputation behind her. She is full of energy and enthusiasm, but unfortunately not talent. Her crazy family and friends try to help, but they have problems of their own.
The cast includes Anne Paulus as Carnelle, Mary Beth Harris as her “perfect” cousin Elain, and Greg Hays as the slightly odd Delmount Williams. Friends and townspeople are played by Lauren Jones as the contest manager Tess Mahoney, and Andrea Dixon as the strange seamstress Popeye Jackson, and Jim Orkis as Mac Sam, a former lover. According to director Todd Ristau, adjunct professor of theatre, “A talented cast brings to life a quirky collection of colorful characters. You’ll be the winner of this hilarious beauty pageant.”
The campus box office is open for credit-card reservations Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., at (540) 887-7189. Tickets are $7 for adults and $5 for students and seniors.
The Mary Baldwin theatre season will continue with The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas, November 15-17 and 20-24; The Tempest, February 12-16; How the Other Half Loves, April 2-6; and One More Time, student directed one-act plays, May 7-11. Season tickets are available for $15/$25 by calling the Mary Baldwin Theatre box office.
