The ‘Master of the Words’ at Blackfriars Playhouse

October 2, 2002

Giles Block, “Master of the Words” for the Globe Theatre in London, will give a free public lecture Monday, October 7, at 7 p.m. at Blackfriars Playhouse, 10 South Market Street, Staunton. The talk is sponsored by Mary Baldwin’s Master of Fine Arts/Master of Letters in Shakespeare and Renaissance Literature in Performance.

Block started in English theatre as an actor in 1963, by way of the National Youth Theatre and Oxford University. In recent years he has become fascinated with helping actors discover a natural, inventive way to do Shakespeare, based on how Block thinks Shakespeare would have expected his actors to approach the text. At the Globe, Block has worked on a variety of Shakespeare’s plays.

Block will be on the Mary Baldwin campus October 7 through 10 as one of an ongoing series of visiting faculty members in the Shakespeare program.
