Virginia Secretary of Education Belle Wheelan will address the Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership cadets during the VWIL Change of Command ceremony at Mary Baldwin University, Saturday, May 17, at 4 p.m. at the Physical Activities Center Track on Tams Street. The public is invited to attend.
The VWIL Corps of Cadets will present a full parade with marching band. Wheelan will give the keynote address. During the ceremony, the colors will be passed from the graduating commander of the Corps of Cadets to the new commander.
This event serves as the graduation ceremony for cadets in the Class of 2003 who have completed all VWIL requirements in addition to the course work necessary for a bachelor’s degree.
VWIL, now completing its eighth year, made history in spring 1999 when 22 young women graduated from its inaugural class. The comprehensive program is for Mary Baldwin students who are interested in intensive leadership training. It includes academic requirements in mathematics, sciences, statistics, computer science, foreign language and leadership studies as well as military training, physical fitness and outdoor education programs to develop confidence and teamwork.
