Squirrels Win!

March 1, 2004

For the first time, the Mary Baldwin basketball team is going to the NCAA Division III Women’s Basketball Tournament. The Fighting Squirrels earned an automatic bid by knocking off the top team, Hood College, in the Atlantic Women’s Colleges Conference championship Saturday, February 28.

The game was everything a championship should be. The score was tied 76-76 with 20 seconds left in the game. Mary Baldwin senior Lynn Malone was fouled on a drive to the basket and sank one of two free throws to put Mary Baldwin up 77-76. Hood called a timeout with 17.7 seconds left to draw up a play, but the Fighting Squirrels denied the Blazers a basket and held on for the win.

Lynn Malone led Mary Baldwin with 32 points while Moe Hardy added 14 and grabbed 10 rebounds. Katrina Scruggs aided the victory with 13 points, and Rayna Henry had 12 boards.

Mary Baldwin (19-8) was ranked fifth out of six in the South Region and will travel to Maryville, Tennessee, Wednesday, March 3, to take on the Maryville Lady Scots at 7 p.m. The winner advances to the second round against Hardin-Simmons in Abilene, Texas, Saturday.

The game will be broadcast live in East Tennessee on WBCR AM 1470 and live over the Internet at www.blountweb.com/wbcr Wednesday night beginning at 6:40.
