The Student Alumnae/i Relations Society (STARS) is a specially selected group of Mary Baldwin University students who serve as representatives of the student body at alumnae/i events. They also work as a team to help the student body foster a relationship with the Alumnae/I Association. Every year these students work behind the scenes to make a number of events successful including Homecoming, Junior Moms Brunch, Spring Fling, and Sophomore Sit Down. Their annual Penny Wars fundraising event will begin February 14 – but this year, there is even more planned during Valentine’s Week!
What could be more fun than putting on shiny red lipstick for a great big kiss on Valentine’s Day? That’s what STARS is asking their fellow students to do. With the Kisses for Soldiers project, students can pucker up to smack a banner. Say what? The banner will be sent as a Valentine to injured soldiers at Walter Reed Hospital to show them how much they are appreciated. The banner will be in the dining hall at lunch time on Monday, February 14 to gather as many lips as possible.
Join the STARS at 7 p.m. on February 14 to watch a romantic movie in the Nuthouse in Hunt Dining Hall. While you are there, you can make fleece blankets for women who need them at the New Directions Women’s Shelter in Staunton.
Share the love in a thank-you letter to volunteers of the Red Cross and Doctor’s Without Borders who are currently assisting with the Tsunami clean-up. The letter-writing campaign will take place during lunch on February 15 on the mezzanine in Hunt Dining Hall.
One of Mary Baldwin’s long-standing traditions is Penny Wars. It starts Monday on Valentine’s Day and ends at dinner on Friday, February 18. This is a way for students to contribute to the college’s Annual Fund, and to have a spirited competition between classes. Which class will give the most this year?
Where do those pennies go? Find out at the “Show You Care” fair on Thursday, February 17. You will gain an understanding of the importance of your gift as you talk to representatives from various campus offices about the cost of running the college.
