Dr. John F. Mehner Dies at 84

April 14, 2006

A longtime member of the Mary Baldwin community has passed away. On Thursday, April 13, 2006, Dr. John E. Mehner, professor emeritus of biology, died after a short hospital stay. His health had been declining for some time, but his mind remained keen.

Dr. Mehner joined the faculty in 1963 and retired in 1986. An ornithologist who did groundbreaking work on the effect of DDT on American Robins and who taught excellent field and laboratory skills to his students, he was much beloved by his former students, his colleagues, and many friends in the broader community. He helped his students achieve much while in college and go on to successful careers in the sciences. For many at Mary Baldwin and in the Staunton community, his enthusiasm sparked a lifelong love of birds as well as a strong ethic of environmental conservation. He will be deeply missed.

At his request, there will be no funeral. There will be a memorial service on the Mary Baldwin University campus later in April. Specific information will be posted on this site as soon as it is available.
