Mary Baldwin University’s Sunday Recital Series presents a faculty recital with soprano Melissa Sumner, cellist Elizabeth Cantrell, and pianists Linda Gamble Heuer and Lise Keiter-Brotzman Sunday, September 23. Sumner and Heuer will perform arias from Mozart’sDon Giovanniand Lehar’sThe Merry Widowas well as a set of Spanish songs,Poema en forma de cancionesby Joaquin Turina. Cantrell and Keiter-Brotzman will perform Barber’s Sonata for cello and piano and “The Swan” by Saint-Saens.
Melissa Sumner, soprano, has appeared widely in opera, oratorio, and recital. A native of Christiansburg, Virginia, she is a graduate of Emory and Henry College. Sumner is on the music faculty at Mary Baldwin University as well as Valley Music Academy.
Elizabeth Cantrellearned a bachelor’s of music in cello performance and music history from Oberlin Conservatory of Music and a master’s of music from Florida State University. She was in the first class at University of Georgia to graduate with a doctorate of musical arts. She maintains a private cello studio at her home in Greenwood, and teaches as an adjunct instructor of music at Mary Baldwin University and for the Boyd Tinsley Foundation at the Charlottesville High School.
Linda Gamble Heueris the accompanist to the Mary Baldwin Choir and adjunct instructor of music. She has served as an accompanist for National Association of Teachers of Singing Competitions, and also has a private studio. Heuer has a BMus from University of Michigan School of Music and a MA from Eastern Michigan University.
PianistLise Keiter-Brotzmanhas performed nationwide and is active as a solo recitalist, collaborative artist, and soloist with orchestra. Keiter-Brotzman joined the faculty at Mary Baldwin University in the fall of 1998 and is chair of the music department. She earned a bachelor of music from Oberlin Conservatory, a master’s and doctorate of music at Indiana University, where she also received the Award for Outstanding Teaching.
The performance will be at 3 p.m. on September 23 in Mary Baldwin University’s Francis Auditorium at the corner of Coalter and Frederick streets, Staunton. Tickets are $5 for the general public and $4 for students and seniors. For more information, call (540) 887-7294.
