Train Trek Opens Path to America

December 12, 2007

It all started with a promise to meet up in Times Square for New Year’s Eve.

Japanese exchange students Kana Naito, 21, and Chihiro Tomiyama, 22, never intended to map out a trek across America — but, as it turns out, that’s exactly what they did.

This morning, the two will leave the security of their dorm rooms at Mary Baldwin University for a marathon trip around the United States, crossing almost 10,000 miles on a 30-day rail pass.

Their plan: To see America.
