The final show for the fall season at the Hunt Gallery features the recent ceramic works of Rebekah Wostrel. The show, Titled, “White Works +” opens November 10 and runs until December 5.
A native of Pennsylvania, Wostrel has been working in the field of ceramics for 10 years. In addition to creating and showing her own body of works, she has taken an active role in art education. For nearly ten years Wostrel has shared her knowledge and skills as both an instructor and lecturer at a number of reputable schools, including Berkeley, Princeton, and Harvard. Along with her teaching experience, she is the recipient of a number of grants and awards, including a Fulbright Fellowship to research ritual Balinese terracotta. Currently Wostrel teaches at the Piedmont Virginia Community College in Charlottesville where she teaches Fundamentals of Design. She is also the artist in residence for the McGuffey Art Center, offering ceramics classes and workshops. Wostrel graduated with a BA in Anthropology from Smith College, Pennsylvania, and earned her MFA in ceramics from Pennsylvania State University. Wostrel consistently shows her work, participating in over 40 solo and group exhibitions here in the United States as well as internationally, including shows in Indonesia and China.
Wostrel’s exhibit of recent works features forms created primarily in porcelain with a limited pallet of whites and blues. Describing her work, she says, “my clay work has become ever more simple in its treatment of color and texture –lately I have constrained form, too—responding, for example, to the concision of Scandinavian industrial design.” She continues, saying, “At the same time, I have begun to allow a current of whimsy to surface, affixing the bourgeois affect of decorative floral decals upon an otherwise Suprematist atmosphere.”
A reception for the artist will be held on Monday, November 10, from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in Hunt Gallery, which is located in Hunt Hall on the Mary Baldwin University campus. The public is invited to attend. Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists. The gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the College’s academic year.
