Unnecessary Farce Premieres at Mary Baldwin

September 16, 2009

Mary Baldwin University Theatre presents the Central Virginia premiere of Paul Slade Smith’s hilarious comedy Unnecessary Farce. The season premier performance opens September 30 and runs through October 4 with Wednesday through Saturday evening shows starting at 7:30 and Sunday Matinee performance are at 2:00 pm in the Fletcher Collins Theatre, Deming Hall.

This wickedly funny farce tells the story of incompetent cops, questionable politicians, an accountant without her clothes, and a mob killer with a kilt. There’s loveable confusion as to who’s in what room, who’s being taped, who’s taken the money, who’s hired the hit man … and where is that bagpipe music coming from?

Terry Southerington directs familiar faces from the Mary Baldwin stage in this engaging ensemble cast; Unnecessary Farce stars Patrick Smith, Anna Ferrandino, Alexandra Yates, Michael Vayvada, Michael E. Lafferty, Thadd McQuaid, and Ellen Jean Selby, with Mary Baldwin Theatre technicians running the show from behind the curtain.

According to Southerington, “This play is wonderfully fun. With all those doors, the timing, and people running around in their underwear, the only thing that stops it from being modern British farce is that it isn’t written by a Brit.”
