October 5-30, 2009, the exhibition VERVE: New Paintings by Janet DeCover, will be on view at Mary Baldwin’s Hunt Gallery.
Originally from Wilmington, North Carolina, DeCover currently resides in Richmond, Virginia, where, in 1971, she obtained her BFA in Painting and Printmaking from Virginia Commonwealth University. DeCover has shown her work throughout Virginia in venues such as the McLean Project for the Arts, Piedmont Virginia Community College (Charlottesville), 1708 Gallery (Richmond), and Reynolds Gallery Richmond). She has also exhibited beyond Virginia and the United States at a number of galleries that include the Anderson Gallery at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa; the Hite Art Institute at the University of Louisville, Louisville, Kentucky; La galerie de l’Atelier Circulaire in Montreal, Canada; Daegu Arts Museum in Dageu, South Korea; and, Instituto Cultural Peruano Norte Americano in Lima, Peru. DeCover’s work is represented by Reynolds Gallery in Richmond.
DeCover’s nonobjective paintings often evoke an obscure narrative or a kind of fantastical sequencing. To describe her upcoming exhibition at Hunt Gallery, DeCover uses the words of Tom Robbins from his book, Fierce Invalids From Hot Climates. “That’s the way the mind works: the human brain is genetically disposed toward organization, yet it not tightly controlled, will link one imagerial fragment to another on the flimsiest of pretense and in the most freewheeling manner, as if it takes a kind of organic pleasure in creative association, without regard for logic or chronological sequence.”
A reception will be held for the artist on Monday, October 5, from 4:30-6 p.m. in Hunt Gallery. The public is invited to attend. Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists. The Gallery is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. during the College’s academic year.
