Callers Sought to Propel Phonathon’s Success

An ambitious fundraising project is off to a record-breaking start this year and the college is looking for a few good students to help propel the effort in 2011.

The Office of Institutional Advancement is seeking five students to join the Phonathon, a team of students who call friends and alumnae/i to help boost pledges to the Baldwin Fund. Formerly called the Annual Fund, the Baldwin Fund supports all integral parts of a Mary Baldwin education.

For 2010–11, the Phonathon Goal is $250,000, up from $175,000 last year and $150,000 in fiscal year 2009. This week, the Phonathon celebrated raising $100,000, a goal that in the 2009–10 effort wasn’t reached until February.

“We hit the $100,000 mark this year on December 6 at about 7 p.m.,” said Danielle Beckey, Phonathon coordinator. “Sha’Teria Johnson ’12, who has raised more than $16,000 in pledges by herself, pushed us past the milestone mark. We celebrated with pizzas during break and Sha’Teria placed the $100,000 acorn on the tree on our wall.”

In part, Beckey credits the callers’ success this year to the knowledge Mary Baldwin’s new Director of Annual Giving Brian Yurochko has brought to the Phonathon. Before joining the team at Mary Baldwin this fall, Yurochko raised money through Duquesne University’s own Phonathon.

“He helped streamline [Mary Baldwin’s] program to run more efficiently and effectively. We have also been blessed with a great group of student callers, who are dedicated to coming to work every night,” Beckey said. ” I am looking for motivated, outgoing, responsible, and knowledgeable students to help us reach our $250,000 goal for the Baldwin Fund.”

Callers are asked to work any two evening shifts a week from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday or 4 to 8 p.m. on Sunday. The Phonathon caller position is a paid, non-work study position, but many callers choose to take on those positions in addition to their Phonathon work because callers work nights and report to their work-study positions during the day.

“It can be done with good time-management skills,” Beckey said.
