The Mary Baldwin University Athletic Department participated in the Cans Across the Conference Food Drive again this fall and collected 1,162 items that will be delivered to the Blue Ridge Area Food Bank.
The Fighting Squirrels softball team collected the most non-perishable food items with 432. In addition to bringing back food after fall break, the team went out into the community on Halloween and asked for items from local neighborhoods.
Amanda Fadden, a member of the Cross Country team and Virginia Women’s Institute for Leadership (VWIL) cadet, organized a can collection on Veteran’s Day. With help from student-athletes and other members of VWIL, students collected approximately 400 items.
The Cans Across the Conference food drive was started in 2004 by the Student Athlete Advisory Committee of the USA South Athletic Conference in an effort to give back to their local communities.
Colleges across the conference collected 29,233 items this fall. In the nine-year history of the program, USA South institutions have donated 259,185 items to various organizations. With a total of 9,220 items, Christopher Newport University is the Cans Across the Conference Champion for 2012. Ferrum College collected 5,339 items to finish second while Greensboro College’s 3,874 items rounded out the top three.</p
