Joseph "Joe" Sprangel, Jr.
BA, Eastern Michigan University; MBA, Spring Arbor University; PhD, Lawrence Technological University
Joseph R. Sprangel Jr. (Joe) is an associate professor of business administration and department co-chair for Mary Baldwin University. He currently holds the H. Gordon & Mary Beth Reed Smyth Chair of Business Administration. His teaching focus is on sustainable development or “triple bottom line ” business management with course offerings of Business Senior Seminar, Management Principles, Perspectives in Sustainability, Project Management, and Strategy & Sustainability in Business Decisions. His research areas of interest are business adoption and entrepreneurial startups focused on sustainable development practices.
Before joining the Mary Baldwin faculty in 2010, Sprangel taught at Ithaca College for three years, where his classes included Operations Management in the undergraduate program and Decision Support Analysis and Sustainable Practices in Operations & Technology in the MBA program. His classroom experience also included adjunct work at Spring Arbor University and Lawrence Technological University teaching Change Management, Operations Management, Organizational Behavior, and Strategy courses in the undergraduate and graduate programs. He brings 28 years of industry experience to the classroom, which included work in machine build and repair, machine design, manufacturing engineering, and plant and engineering management.
Sprangel earned a Doctorate of Business Administration degree from Lawrence Technological University. His dissertation research was “A Study of the Direct and Mediational Effects of the SOAR™ Framework, Trust, and Environmental Management Systems on Chemical Management Services Supplier Performance at Haas TCM Group.” He also holds degrees of Master of Business Administration from Spring Arbor University, Bachelor of Business Administration from Eastern Michigan University, and an Associate Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology.

Dr. Donovan D. Branche earned a BA in Health Care Administration from Mary Baldwin University, and an MPA with a concentration in Health Care Administration and Ph.D. in Strategic Leadership Studies from James Madison University, Harrisonburg, VA. She has worked for many years with health care facilities, local government and nonprofit organizations. Dr. Branche teaches a variety of courses including Introduction to Health Care Administration, Health Care policy, politics and law, Health Care Research Methods and Health Care Ethics.
She has spoken at several conferences including the Lemon Symposium at the College of William and Mary and The Western Social Science Association in Albuquerque, NM.
Dr. Branche has a variety of academic interests including health care disparities and implications of the Affordable Care Act on health care disparities, leadership diversity and leader emergence, feminist studies and black feminist standpoint theory. Dr. Branche is committed to molding future women leaders and having been an Baldwin Online and Adult Programs student is committed to being involved with adult learners.
Chief (Ret) Doug Davis started his career with the Williamsburg, Virginia Police Department in 1977. While with Williamsburg, Chief Davis served as a Police Officer, Investigator, Lieutenant, Major of the Uniform Division and Major of Support Services. The Chief’s responsibilities included general patrol duties; investigation of all types of crimes from bad checks to double homicide; managing a patrol shift and teaching at the academy; managing the uniform division to include scheduling, special assignments, special events, policy development, dignitary protection and training; managing the 911 Center, technology and strategic planning. While with Williamsburg Chief Davis graduated from the 198th Session of the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
In 2003, Chief Davis was appointed as the Chief of Police for the City of Waynesboro, Virginia where he was responsible for all aspects of policing. While with Waynesboro, Chief Davis discovered his love of teaching as an Adjunct Professor for Blue Ridge Community College. As the Chairman of the Comprehensive Gang Model Program, for Staunton, Augusta and Waynesboro, a relationship was developed with Mary Baldwin when the Sociology Department was contracted to do statistical analysis of the Program’s surveys. That relationship developed into a full time faculty position after his retirement in 2011.
Chief Davis is Past President of the Virginia Association of Chiefs of Police; Past Chairman of the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation; President of the Virginia Association of Criminal Educators; Past President of the Central Shenandoah Association of Chiefs of Police. Chief Davis has served on many local, state and federal law enforcement committees throughout his career and is a member of numerous professional associations including a Lifetime Membership with the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Chief Davis holds a Bachelor of Arts in Criminology from Saint Leo’s College and a Masters in Justice and Risk Administration from Virginia Commonwealth University. Chief Davis is also a graduate of the Professional Executive Leadership School sponsored by the Virginia Police Chiefs Foundation at the University of Richmond and the Leading, Educating and Developing Program with the Weldon Cooper Center for Public Service at the University of Virginia.
Chief Davis is married to his high school sweetheart and they have 3 successful children and 5 grandchildren. He enjoys woodworking, home improvement, reading, music, hunting, camping, photography, flying model aircraft, traveling, his Beagle Emma and recently, skydiving.

Co-Director of the Criminal Justice Program, Beth Easterling holds a Ph.D. in Sociology with a concentration in Criminology from the University of Tennessee, M.S. in Applied Sociology from the University of North Florida, and a B.A. in Economics from Roanoke College. Her areas of interest include families and crime/incarceration, punishment and society, and social stratification. With a background in applied sociology, she searches for practical, policy, and programming implications in her academic research and uses those examples to bring the classroom to life. Dr. Easterling loves teaching in a liberal arts environment! She enjoys teaching introductory level courses as they provide the opportunity to introduce students from a variety of disciplines, backgrounds, and interests to sociology, criminology, and criminal justice. She enjoys teaching upper level courses to criminal justice majors as these courses allow her to discuss specific sociological and criminological topics in depth with criminologists and criminal justice practitioners-to-be. Dr. Easterling serves as the faculty advisor for Nu Sigma, the Mary Baldwin Chapter of the National Criminal Justice Honor Society.
When not doing research or teaching, Dr. Easterling enjoys running and spending time with her daughter, her husband (who she has followed all over the east coast and beyond thanks to his career in the Marine Corps), and her two rescue dogs.

Mary Clay Thomas is the social work program director and an associate professor of social work at Mary Baldwin. She relocated to Staunton, Va in 2008 after spending twelve years studying, practicing and teaching social work in Burlington, Vermont. A graduate of Saint Timothy’s School, an all female high school in Stevenson, Maryland, she went on to earn her BA from the University of Montana in English and Psychology and an MSW from the University of Vermont where she was a recipient of the Vermont Title-IVE Child Welfare Scholarship.
Before coming to Mary Baldwin, Mary Clay taught social work courses, supervised field work, and advised the social work club at Champlain College in Burlington, Vermont. She practiced as a child protection social worker, school social worker, and worked with community programs supporting the independence of elders while in Vermont.
At Mary Baldwin, Mary Clay serves as the faculty adviser to the Social Work Club and oversees the international social work field placement in Honduras. She is an active community member, recently serving as Board Chair, at the United Way of Greater Augusta. She is the mother of two girls and is an avid runner, hiker, gardener and loves traveling to new places.
Sung Il "Calvin" Chung

Doris is the Field Director and an assistant professor of social work who teaches both on-campus and in the Baldwin Online and Adult Programs at Mary Baldwin. Doris obtained her BSW from Longwood University and her MSW with a specialization in mental health from Virginia Commonwealth University. She is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker in the commonwealth of Virginia.
Prior to joining the faculty at Mary Baldwin, Doris worked in the social work field for more than twenty-eight years. She has expertise in the areas of child welfare (in particular, foster care and adoption) and domestic violence. She has also worked in the areas of community mental health, refugee unaccompanied minors’ programs, as a state and federal reviewer of child welfare practice, as a trainer and as field instructor. Most recently, Doris worked for the City of Charlottesville’s Department of Social Services as a foster care and adoption supervisor; and she has taught online for Portland State University in their post-graduate certificate program in foster and adoptive family therapy for the last eight years.
At Mary Baldwin, Doris coordinates the Field Practicum experience and works continuously to develop new and meaningful field placements for the program and to prepare BSW students for their entry into the field. She was recently one of two recipients of the Spencer Center’s High Impact Innovation fund which allowed her to participate in a service learning trip with students to Cherident, Haiti where she and the students collected data for a community needs assessment that she and Dr. Kai Kennedy, Director of Clinical Education in Physical Therapy used as part of their research into student learning opportunities. Doris serves on the Board of Directors at the Augusta Regional Free Clinic and has served as speaker on adoption-related issues in the Charlottesville/Albemarle areas. She is an avid animal lover and often visits the local shelter with her oldest son to help socialize the newcomers. She is involved in both the Staunton/Augusta as well as the Charlottesville/Albemarle communities.
Doris enjoys home projects, creating and repurposing found items and gifting friends and family with her creations. Doris is a very proud mom of two handsome and talented teenage boys: Shaun and Collin. She enjoys spending time with her boys and their three dogs: Taylor, Lexi and Cyrus and one cat: Taz.
Bruce R. Dorries
BA, Baylor University; MA, Corpus Christi State University; PhD, University of Missouri-Columbia
Associate Professor of Marketing Communication Bruce Dorries teaches Public Speaking, Mass Communication, Media Writing, Principles of Advertising, and Senior Seminar in Marketing Communication. Additionally, he teaches Civic Leadership and Social Entrepreneurism. His column and photos appear weekly in the Staunton News Leader. Additionally, Dorries connects MBU students with partners for learning in Haiti through study abroad.
Dr. Dorries earned his BA in Journalism and History at Baylor University, his MA from The University of Corpus Christi State University (now Texas A&M at Corpus Christi), and his Ph.D. in Communication from the University of Missouri. For six years he worked as a writer and photo journalist in the public relations and newspaper industries.Previously, he taught at the University of Missouri, Colorado State, Winona State and Radford.
His interests include: working with local environmental groups and managing a wildlife preserve/family farm in Augusta County.
Janet S. Ewing

As director of the Q Center, Janet Ewing has a goal to make every member of the MBU community comfortable thinking with numbers.
Eileen T. Hinks
Dr. Eileen T. Hinks received her BS in biology at Ursinus College in Collegeville, PA and received a PhD in microbiology from the Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. She completed a postdoctoral program in medical microbiology and immunology at Erie County Medical Center. From 1978 through 1988, Dr. Hinks held a variety of positions in a multi-hospital system in the Philadelphia area: Director of Microbiology and Immunology for three suburban hospital laboratories, Laboratory Manager at Rolling Hill Hospital and later, Corporate Laboratory Manager for United Hospitals, Inc. In addition to medical laboratory, infection control, teaching, and administrative responsibilities, Dr. Hinks was an active member, symposium coordinator, and branch officer of the Southeastern PA branch of the American Society for Microbiology.
After a brief family hiatus, Dr. Hinks joined Mary Baldwin’s Baldwin Online and Adult Programs in 1992 as an instructor. She began teaching health care administration courses in 1999 and since 2001 she has been an adjunct assistant professor of health care administration. She teaches a variety of courses including Biology of Women, Epidemiology, Women’s Health Care Issues, Introduction to Public Health, and Public Health Issues. In 2005, she received a faculty development grant through the health care administration program to do original research in the area of pandemic influenza planning in the Roanoke, Virginia area working in cooperation with the Virginia Department of Health. Dr. Hinks is also a part-time instructor in the chemistry and biology departments at Virginia Military Institute where she teaches chemical science for liberal arts majors and a public health course. She has received two faculty mentor awards at VMI for her outstanding teaching.

Claire T. Kent
BBA, MBA, James Madison University
Claire Kent is an associate professor of business administration for Mary Baldwin University. She teaches marketing and management courses that include the following areas of study: Marketing Principles, Consumer Behavior, Marketing Research, Organizational Behavior and Interpersonal Communication, Managing Human Resources, Women in Business and Entrepreneurial Roles, and Marketing Communication. She joined Mary Baldwin in 1991 in Charlottesville, Virginia, where she taught and advised in the Baldwin Online and Adult Programs. She also managed the regional center in Charlottesville for several years. She took a sabbatical leave in 2000 to complete a study on the perception of life balance and related factors. Upon her return in 2001, she assumed a faculty position in the Residential Program for Women (RCW) on the main campus. She currently teaches and advises in both the Business and Marketing Communication majors and serves as a Bertie Wilson Murphy Distinguished Chair in Business Administration. In addition to her work with Mary Baldwin, she develops and conducts workshops and individual training on topics such as generational and gender communication patterns in the work place, work life integration, sexual harassment education and prevention, personal branding and marketing strategies for individuals and small enterprises.
Prior to her affiliation with Mary Baldwin, Professor Kent served on the faculty of Piedmont Virginia Community College where she taught and was active in developing internship and cooperative education placements for business students. Prior to her teaching career, she held a variety of sales and marketing positions in several industries, including telecommunications, advertising, and the medical supply industry. She received a BBA from James Madison University in 1979, summa cum laude, with a double major in marketing and management, and earned the MBA degree from James Madison University in 1984. Her continuing education work in recent years has included completion of certificate programs in the following areas: Business Coaching, Corporate Coach U International (2001); Certified Sustainability Professional Program, jointly offered through University of Georgia and Global Sustainability Institute of Technology (2009); Advanced Christian Life Coach Training, Light University (2013). She holds membership in professional organizations: Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM), American Marketing Association (AMA), American Association of University Women (AAUW), and Sigma Beta Delta Honor Society.
On a personal and professional level, she is passionate about organizations that demonstrate a commitment to “Women Helping Women.” These include, but are not limited to, Bead forLife, Women for Women International, CGUI: Changemakers for Women. She is particularly interested in researching organizations and branding that promotes empowerment of women. She is also very passionate about her work in the area of spiritual development. She is a Certified Lay Servant Speaker in the United Methodist Church, a facilitator of the Women of Faith class at Crozet United Methodist Church, and co-leader of a prayer ministry. She is married and has two adult daughters, a son-in-law, and two grand dogs!
Catherine "Cathy" Ferris McPherson
BA, Mary Baldwin College; MBA, West Virginia Graduate College
Cathy Ferris McPherson is an associate professor of business administration and marketing communication for Mary Baldwin University, where she teaches and advises students in the Baldwin Online and Adult Programs at the Richmond Regional Center. She teaches courses in marketing principles and strategy, advertising, integrated marketing communication, business strategy, and the senior thesis. She joined the faculty in 1993.
Professor McPherson has 25 years experience in all aspects of marketing and is a professionally trained focus group moderator, specializing in the areas of retail and service marketing. As a business consultant, she has worked closely with companies such as Luck Stone, Dupont Fibers Federal Credit Union, World Access, and Goodwill Industries of Central Virginia in the area of brand strategy and development, as well as provided customer service and marketing training for individual retailers and shopping center developers, including Forest City Enterprises and Donohoe O’Brien. She conducts workshops and speaks frequently on the topic of building brands from within the organization, and branding as a business philosophy.
Ms. McPherson is a co-founder of Dress for Success Richmond, a non-profit organization that helps low-income women successfully prepare to enter the job market through self-esteem enhancement and professional skill development.
She holds a MBA from Marshall University (formerly WV Graduate College) and a BA in business/economics from Mary Baldwin University, and has the Certified Marketing Director designation through the International Council of Shopping Centers. Ms. McPherson is active in the Richmond chapter of the American Marketing Association, and is a past president of the organization.
Denise G. Osborn-Harrison
Lallon G. Pond
I graduated from the University of Georgia with a BS in animal science, then earned my MBA from Florida State University. I also completed doctoral work at Florida State in finance, leaving ABD (all but dissertation). Unfortunately, it remains ABD to this day (and that was a long time ago…).
I have been happily employed at Mary Baldwin University since the fall of 1992, initially serving in both the Residential College for Women (RCW) and the Baldwin Online and Adult Programs (Baldwin Online and Adult Programs).
I particularly enjoy my collaborations with adult and young women students in furthering their understanding of numbers. Being conversant in the language of numbers gives us the ability to be critical readers of statistical information and to more fully analyze the financial health of business entities. I am very excited by the sustainability focus of the business discipline. We will be helping the future leaders of our country evaluate the health and well-being of the economy in a more holistic way and with a longer-term perspective than is currently the case. In this capacity, I hope that our department, as well as our college, helps the students we work with to see the world as a place in which they make a difference every day.
Gauri S. Rai
Rai has a BA and MAS from Kashi Vidyapith University in Uttar Pradesh, India, and his MSW from St. Louis University in Missouri, and his Ph.D. in social work from Rutgers University in New York. He came to Mary Baldwin in 2004 from James Madison University where he was an associate professor in the Social Work Department.
