Planning for Graduate School
If you’re considering graduate school in applied mathematics or a career that requires a graduate degree, explore your options early. Requirements vary by program, but many share common prerequisites and application steps.
While some requirements are common across graduate programs, others vary by field. For example:
- Computer science: Coding and programming coursework
- Biomedical engineering: Additional science courses
- Accounting: Microeconomics and macroeconomics courses
Research programs early to understand requirements and plan your coursework accordingly.
Some graduate programs require entrance exams such as the GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) or GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test). Like the SAT or ACT, these exams assess general skills at the graduate level. Preparation can take weeks or months, so check requirements early and plan ahead.
Students interested in engineering should consider Mary Baldwin’s dual degree program offered in partnership with the University of Virginia.
This is a 5-year program that earns you a bachelor’s degree from MBU and either a Master of Science or a Master of Engineering degree from UVA.
This program requires students to complete MATH 211 + 212 and PHYS 241 + 242 in their freshman year, so, if you’re interested, contact Dr. Wolff at agwolff@marybaldwin.edu as soon as possible.
