Network Administrator
Overview
Mary Baldwin University Office of Information Technology is searching for experienced candidates for the position of Network Administrator. To join the OIT at MBU team, please review the list of responsibilities and qualifications. While this is our ideal list, we will consider candidates that do not necessarily have all the qualifications but have sufficient experience and talent.
Under the supervision of the Director of OIT and/or other IT managers, the successful candidate will help maintain and support MBU’s network. In summary, the Network Administrator ensures stability and integrity of voice, data, and wireless network services. Drives daily operations and leads end-user training, where required. Actively identifies opportunities for continuous improvements and innovation. Analyzes and resolves network issues in collaboration with relevant stakeholders. Ensures proper, efficient interoperation of all university network resources.
The role also provides secondary support for related systems infrastructure that directly supports network operations, including server platforms, virtualization, and authentication services. The ideal candidate will possess strong technical expertise in enterprise networking, solid troubleshooting skills, and a commitment to delivering secure and dependable connectivity in a higher education environment.

Major Responsibilities
Network Infrastructure:
- Configure, implement, and maintain enterprise network infrastructure, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless access points, controllers, and related appliances from various vendors.
- Administer the university’s campus network environment, including LAN, WAN, WLAN, VLANs and network segmentation.
- Monitor network performance, identify bottlenecks, and implement solutions to optimize traffic flow to ensure network stability including root-cause analysis for outages, latency issues, connectivity failures, and other service disruptions.
- Manage and troubleshoot network protocols and services including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, etc.
- Implement and maintain network security measures, including firewall rules, intrusion detection/prevention systems, and access control lists.
- Oversee and manage the university’s wireless infrastructure, ensuring robust and secure connectivity across campus.
- Administration of virtualization hosts and core infrastructure systems that support network services and applications.
- Participate in planning and executing network upgrades, equipment replacements, expansion projects, and disaster recovery planning related to network services.
- Develop and maintain network documentation, including topology diagrams, IP schemas, standard configurations, and operating procedures.
- Coordinate with vendors and service providers for internet connectivity, telecommunications, and network hardware support.
- Work in conjunction with System admins to provide secondary administration and support for systems that directly support network operations, including Windows and Linux servers, directory services, backup, recovery, and business continuity efforts for critical infrastructure systems.
- In collaboration with the Cyber Security Analysts, to implement security measures on the MBU Network.
- Collaborate with help desk staff and other IT team members to resolve escalated issues affecting campus connectivity and infrastructure services.
These responsibilities are not exhaustive and additional duties can be assigned as needed.
Qualifications & Experience
Required:
- Associate’s degree in computer science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- 2-5 years professional experience in IT support and network administration, preferably in a higher education or enterprise environment.
- Proven experience with the configuration and troubleshooting of enterprise-level network hardware.
- Solid understanding of networking protocols (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, VPNs, routing protocols).
- Experience with Windows Server, Firewall, Cisco/HP routers and switches, Aruba WAPs, ClearPass, Virtualization Hardware and Software, Azure AD, M365.
- Working knowledge of firewall configuration and security.
- Experience with enterprise monitoring and logging tools.
- Experience with virtualization technologies.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, organizational skills and attention to details.
- Excellent communication (written and verbal) and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment.
Preferred Skills and Qualifications:
- Relevant industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, CompTIA Network+, CompTIA Server+, MCSA, MCSE).
- Experience with Windows Server administration (Active Directory, Group Policy, PowerShell).
- Experience with Linux server administration.
- Experience with cloud services, such as Azure.
- Experience in a higher education environment.
Physical Demands & Work Environment:
Due to the hands-on nature of network support, this is an on-premises position located in Staunton, Virginia.
Ability to lift and move computer equipment (up to 50 lbs.).
Ability to work in server rooms, telecom closets, and other infrastructure spaces.
Occasional evenings, weekends, and on-call work may be required to support after-hours maintenance windows and emergency response for network-related outages or critical changes.
