Dan Layman, Mary Baldwin’s associate vice president for Institutional Advancement, will become the next president and CEO of the Community Foundation of the Central Blue Ridge, effective March 4.
Layman brings with him 20 years experience in development and fundraising, primarily in the field of higher education. In addition to his leadership within the fundraising team at Mary Baldwin, Layman has served local organizations such as the American Shakespeare Center, the Frontier Culture Museum, and the Historic Staunton Foundation.
In his most recent role at Mary Baldwin, Layman has helped oversee fundraising efforts for Ever Ahead: The Campaign for Mary Baldwin University, which is on track to meet its $80 million goal.
Director of Development Tamara Ridenour will serve as interim director of operations until the new vice president is in place. In addition, Mary Baldwin has asked Travis J. “Ty” Tysinger to serve as campaign advisor for this period. Tysinger has fundraising experience with Stuart Hall, the Boys Club of Virginia, and with his alma mater, Woodberry Forest School. Mary Baldwin’s Campaign Cabinet, led by Claire Lewis “Yum” Arnold ’69, will also continue to be highly engaged.
Layman — who earned his bachelor’s degree at Youngstown State University and master’s degree from Miami University in Ohio — joined the Office of Institutional Advancement in 2009 at special request of the Board of Trustees, which encouraged him to put his considerable fundraising expertise into the service of Mary Baldwin.
“While it was not a role he sought, he accepted with grace,” said Jane Miller ’76, vice chair of the Board of Trustees. “No one could have been more dedicated or effective, and he has served Mary Baldwin with great distinction. Now, our Institutional Advancement operation is much strengthened and our campaign fundraising is on track, and Dan has a wonderful opportunity to take up a position that will be personally and professionally fulfilling and in which he can make a real difference for the community he has grown to love since moving to Virginia.”
Layman will succeed outgoing Community Foundation President Becky Kohler, who announced her retirement in the fall after leading the foundation for five years. The Foundation serves the communities of Staunton and Waynesboro, as well as Augusta, Nelson, and Highland counties.
