Associate Professor of Education Tamra Willis and students from Riverheads High School and James Madison High School met with Gov. Terry McAuliffe and Secretary of Natural Resources Molly Ward on June 27 to share information about environment-based learning (EBL) projects, including the ongoing Back Creek Stream Bank Restoration project in partnership with Mary Baldwin College.

The group has been working with the students to restore a healthy stream bank along Back Creek in the community of Middlebrook. Each year, the students are involved in such activities as soil improvement and mulching; stream bank stabilization and erosion control; tree, shrub and pollinator flower planting; stream quality surveying and testing; and trout releases.

While meeting with the governor, Willis also presenting him with a copy of Richard Louv’s new book Vitamin N: The Essential Guide to a Nature Rich Life.

Mary Baldwin College offers one of the nation’s first EBL graduate programs designed specifically for educators. With an environment-based educational approach, educators use the local community and environment to teach all subjects in a way that is meaningful and relevant to K-12 students.
