Members of the Class of 1967 have exceeded their goal to raise $50,000 for renovations to the Jesse Cleveland Pearce Science Center in honor of their 50th Reunion year, celebrating the fundraising feat last month during Mary Baldwin University’s 175th Anniversary All-Alumni Homecoming.
“They chose to name a classroom in Pearce as part of a renovation project that not only meets a critical Mary Baldwin need but also enables their class to proactively invest in the university and leave a lasting legacy,” said Brooke Herndon, vice president for university advancement.
While on campus, the classmates gathered in Pearce 401 to participate in a naming ceremony; to share stories from their biology, chemistry, physics, and psychology courses; and to raise a glass to toast their fellow classmates both present and absent. The classroom donor recognition plaque will read:
Given in Honor of
Class of 1967
The Angels In Disguise
By the end of the Reunion weekend, the class had raised $57,285. They are now hoping to hit $60,000 by the end of the fiscal year on June 30.
“The Class of 1967 are truly the Angels in Disguise as described in their class song written over 50 years ago,” Herndon said.
We’re the class of ’67,
Sharpest girls this side of Heaven,
We’re the Angels in Disguise,
So desired by all the guys!
We’ve got brains but that ain’t all,
Count on us to have a ball,
Sixty-seven tops ‘em all,
Just wait and see, Whee!
Just wait and see!
Pearce Science Center has served Mary Baldwin and its students for 47 years without major updates to the classrooms or labs. A phased renovation project is being partially funded by the Carpenter Foundation and will benefit all Mary Baldwin students, who, like their counterparts in the Class of 1967, spend time studying science as a part of MBU’s liberal arts curriculum.
