From 4:30 to 6 p.m. Monday, November 6, Mary Baldwin’s Hunt Gallery will hold a reception for the opening of Judy Southerland’s exhibition Lacking Wings. The reception is free and open to the public, and will feature refreshments and an artist’s talk starting at 5 p.m. The exhibition itself will remain in Hunt Gallery from November 6 to December 1, 2017.
Southerland writes the following about her work:
Lacking Wings, we do what we can to open up our grounded place. In my southern culture, words were primary in translating experience, but I find images have the power to reveal secrets and become an antidote to corrupted stories and games. Wanting to see as much as possible I learned early on I can be neither for nor against any method or material, and the visual vocabulary I inherited is flexible enough to take on whatever comes to mind. Working the gap between abstract formalism and a highly descriptive narrative visual vernacular is a challenge and a thrill, like looking at the stars and down at your feet.
Born in Pontotoc, MS in 1944, Southerland received her BS in Art Education in 1967 and her MFA from American University in 1978. Her awards include three individual artist’s fellowships from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities in 2011, 1990, and 1991. The artist’s work is included in private and corporate collections in the United States, the UK, Italy, France, Spain, and Singapore. Southerland’s exhibition history includes Washington Project for the Arts, the Corcoran Gallery of Art, Jones Troyer Fitzpatrick Gallery, Katzen Arts Center, and the Korean Cultural Center, all in Washington DC, School 33 Art Center and College of Notre Dame, Baltimore MD, Delaware Center for Contemporary Art, Wilmington, University of Miami, Middletown Ohio, McLean Project for the Arts, Ellipse Art Center, and Greater Reston Art Center, in Virginia. The artist taught at the Corcoran College of Art + Design for 25 years and has been an instructor/facilitator for an artist residency program in Seravezza, Italy since 2003. Southerland lives and works in Washington DC.
Hunt Gallery is dedicated to the exhibition of contemporary work in all media by regionally and nationally recognized artists.
