Mary Baldwin University has tapped Amanda Evans as the new head women’s soccer coach. Evans comes to Staunton from Compton College in Compton, California, where she coached since 2015. She brings excellent experience to the Fighting Squirrels in recruitment, team-building, and game improvement, and she shares MBU’s student-centered philosophy.
“I am thrilled to have the opportunity to join this amazing team in the athletics department,” Evans said. “I was attracted to MBU because of its great tradition and family atmosphere.”
MBU Athletics has already begun rebuilding the soccer program under the leadership of Soccer Coordinator and Head Men’s Soccer Coach Robert “Bob” Rose after it was suspended in 2017.
Evans built the program at Compton College, bringing innovation and earning achievement during her tenure, including putting the best record in Compton history on the books, plus the highest retention rate and the largest rostered team. She plans to bring that enthusiasm and determination to MBU women’s soccer, building connections across the athletics department and the university as a whole. She sees great things in the team’s future.
“I know that the women’s soccer program is ready and waiting to burst onto the scene,” she said. “I look forward to being a part of the entire MBU family!”
Prior to Compton College, Evans coached NCAA Division III soccer at Northland College in Ashland, Wisconsin, and within three seasons, the team went from bottom in the conference to the first round of playoffs. She also started the women’s program in 2009 at Salt Lake Community College in Salt Lake City, Utah, with an emphasis on developing student-athlete leadership and building community connections.
Evans holds a premier diploma from United Soccer Coaches (formerly NSCAA), and she played at Hawaii Pacific University and had semi-pro training in Utah. She earned a master of science in special education at Western Governors University, and a bachelor’s in exercise and sports science and teaching physical education at the University of Utah.
Evans was born and raised in Wisconsin, and is joining the MBU family with her husband, 7-year-old daughter, 4-year-old son, and 1.5-year-old daughter, and their labradoodle.
