After Decisive Preseason Win, Men’s Soccer Looks to Saturday’s Home Opener

Mary Baldwin University’s men’s soccer club will take the field Saturday in a round-robin tournament with James Madison University and Longwood University, after handily defeating the Southern Virginia University Knights in a preseason match up Aug. 23. The collegiate debut for the Fighting Squirrels — and the debut of any men’s team in MBU’s 177-year history — was somewhat of a Cinderella story, as the rookie squad and coaching staff, with only four days of practice under their belts, dominated possession with 10 shots on goal versus SVU’s one. After taking a 1–0 lead by halftime with a free kick, the Squirrels continued to dominate in the second half, ending the scrimmage with a 2–0 victory. The men’s squad will take on JMU at 10 a.m. and Longwood at 2 p.m. in Saturday’s tournament on the lower athletic field. The women’s club soccer home opener is at 3 p.m. Sept. 11 against William Peace Pacers. Check out all the fall sports schedules online.
