Beleza Duo Opens the 2025 Sunday Recital Season

Join the MBU Community for a Sunday Recital performance featuring the Beleza Duo, a versatile pair of musicians performing samba, funk, soul, blues, and more.

The Music Department at Mary Baldwin University is delighted to announce the first Sunday Recital of the 2025-2026 Concert Season.  On Sunday, September 21 at 3 pm, audiences will be treated to “An Afternoon of Brazilian Music” performed by the Beleza Duo, a popular duo consisting of Madeline Holly Sales, vocals, and Humberto Sales, guitar.  The performance will take place in Francis Auditorium on the Mary Baldwin University campus.

The Beleza Duo is based in Charlottesville, and their wide-ranging musical style includes samba, funk, soul, blues, bossa nova, jazz and Spanish flamenco. Humberto Oliveira Sales (guitar) and Madeline Holly Sales (vocals) blend the melodic, rhythmic and harmonic sounds of North and South America, and they bring an engaging performance style to every event.  Berto, native to Brazil, pursued a formal education in classical guitar, and his knowledge of Brazilian rhythms and study of Spanish Flamenco add to his unique finger-picking playing style. Madeline brings the influence of soul, jazz and blues, and she sings in Portuguese, English and Spanish.

On September 21, the Duo will perform selections by Antônio Carlos Jobim, Paulinho da Viola, Gilberto Gil, and many more!  This is a family-friendly event that will be fun for all.

This season’s Sunday Recital Series also includes performances by the Gee-Mackey Duo (David Gee, cello, with pianist Lynne Mackey) (October 5); Amadi Azikiwe, violin and viola, with pianist Lise Keiter (February 1); and Katherine Jolly, soprano, with pianist Emily Chua (March 29).

Audiences will also not want to miss the opening Carl Broman Concert, featuring the brilliant young pianist Zhu Wang.  Zhu Wang’s performance is on Monday, November 10 at 7:30 pm in Francis Auditorium.

Single tickets for the Beleza Duo (September 21) may be purchased online or at the door and are $5 for the General Public and $4 for students and seniors, and free for children 12 and under.
