Enjoy a Sunday Recital: Gee-Mackey Duo

The Sunday Recital Series at Mary Baldwin University continues on Sunday, October 5 at 3 pm, with a performance by the Gee-Mackey Duo.  The recital will take place in Francis Auditorium on the Mary Baldwin University campus.

The Gee-Mackey Duo features cellist David Gee and pianist Lynne Mackey.  They have performed widely, including engagements in Europe, Africa, and throughout the United States.  Cellist David Gee appears regularly as a soloist, chamber musician, and orchestral cellist, including frequent performances with the Gee-Mackey Duo and the Boccherini Quartet.  He has taught at UNC-Wilmington, Coastal Carolina University, and the University of Memphis, and he has also given masterclasses in Andalucía, Spain. Pianist Lynne Mackey is an active performer of solo, chamber and concerto works.  Her career highlights include performances at Weill Recital Hall in New York City, the Banff Centre in Alberta, Canada, and in Brazil, Spain, Morocco, and the Netherlands. Dr. Mackey is Director of the Virginia Baroque Performance Academy and is an adjunct faculty member in the Mary Baldwin University Music Department.

On October 5, the Duo will treat the audience to Beethoven’s stirring Sonata in F Major, as well as a beautiful set of pieces by French composer Nadia Boulanger.  Also on the program is Requièbros, a spirited work by Spanish composer Gaspar Cassadó, and they will close the recital with Felix Mendelssohn’s monumental Sonata No. 2.  This will be a delightful afternoon of music!

This season’s Sunday Recital Series also includes performances by Amadi Azikiwe, violin and viola, with pianist Lise Keiter (February 1); and Katherine Jolly, soprano, with pianist Erika Switzer (March 29).

Audiences will also not want to miss the opening Carl Broman Concertfeaturing the brilliant young pianist Zhu Wang.  Zhu Wang’s performance is on Monday, November 10 at 7:30 pm in Francis Auditorium.  He will perform works of Beethoven, Schumann, Debussy, and Bartók.

Single tickets for the Gee-Mackey Duo (October 5) may be purchased online or at the door and are $5 for the General Public, $4 for Seniors and Non-MBU students, and free for children 12 and under.
