Mary Baldwin’s incoming undergraduate class includes first-year students, transfer students, and new scholars in the Program for the Exceptionally Gifted. Here is a look at who they are, where they come from, and what they plan to study.
Geography
- 12 states and the District of Columbia are represented, plus one military family arriving from an overseas post.
- Virginia accounts for the largest share, with students from 66 cities and towns across the Commonwealth. Maryland, North Carolina, and California follow.
- Waynesboro is the most common hometown, followed by Virginia Beach, Stafford, Richmond, Chesapeake, and Staunton.
- About one in seven new students comes from the Staunton–Augusta County–Waynesboro area.
- The farthest hometown is in Southern California, more than 2,100 miles from campus. Four students are arriving from the region.
Schools
- First-year students come from 84 high schools. Wilson Memorial sends the largest group, followed by Stuarts Draft, Waynesboro, and Mountain View.
- Transfer students come from 28 colleges and universities, led by Piedmont Virginia Community College and Richard Bland College. Others include VMI, VCU, Old Dominion, George Mason, and institutions in Ohio, Pennsylvania, and California.
Academics
- Most popular intended majors: Business, Psychology, Health Sciences, Biology, Criminal Justice, and Exercise Science.
- Largest Neighborhood: Health & Science, followed closely by Education & Society.
- Most common career goal: nursing, medicine, or another health profession. Physical therapy is the most frequently named specific path. Entrepreneur and business analyst tie as the most common goals outside healthcare.
- 26 students answered “not sure yet” on career plans, and 12 are entering Undecided.
- Signature Neighborhoods are built for this: students survey related majors during their first two years before declaring, with advising and career coaching available through the Commons at Grafton Library.
Age range
- Because the class includes transfer students and PEG scholars alongside traditional first-years, birth years span 17 years.
Names
- Most common first name: Brady (three students). Nine other first names appear twice.
- Most common last name: Johnson (three students). Every other surname appears no more than twice.
- 21 students go by a nickname different from their legal first name.
Birthdays
- August and September are the busiest birthday months.
- Three students share a birthday on August 27, during move-in week.
- Six dates have three-way ties, and 18 dates are shared by at least two students.
- The class includes one student born on New Year’s Day, one on Halloween, and one on St. Patrick’s Day.
- Virgo is the most common zodiac sign, with Aries second. Gemini is the least common.
