Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr

Dr. Royal A. Gurley, Jr. has served as superintendent of Charlottesville City Schools since 2021, bringing more than two decades of experience in public education. Over the course of his career, he has held a range of roles across Virginia school divisions, including teacher, instructional specialist, school administrator, and division-level leader. He also served eight years in the Armed Reserves as a logistics specialist.

A graduate of Virginia State University, Dr. Gurley holds a Bachelor of Arts in sociology, a Master of Education, and a Doctor of Education in educational administration and supervision. He also earned advanced certificates in instructional technology and educational leadership from Virginia Commonwealth University and completed the Urban Superintendents Academy at the University of Southern California.

As superintendent, Dr. Gurley has led Charlottesville City Schools with a focus on expanding opportunity, strengthening community partnerships, and supporting student success. His leadership has included initiatives to improve access to resources for students and families, expand support for diverse learning needs, and guide major division-wide efforts such as school rezoning, new facility development, and strengthened collaboration with educators and staff.

Dr. Gurley’s work has been recognized at the state and national levels, including being named a “Superintendent to Watch” by the National School Public Relations Association.
