A Safe Place to Learn

Our best learning requires that we all feel safe — from the dorm room to the classroom. While emergencies are rare, Mary Baldwin is still committed to providing 24/7 access to safety officers and resources so that our students can work, play, and learn with total peace of mind.

Baldwin Alert Messages

We know that the most important thing in an emergency is clear communication. By signing up for Baldwin Alert Messages (BAM), students can choose to receive text, email, or voicemail updates about imminent threats on campus and how to protect themselves.

Parents can also sign up for BAM through their child’s account to stay informed about any emergency situations on campus.

Campus Safety Officers

MBU employs Campus Safety Officers responsible for ensuring the safety of students, faculty, staff, and visitors. Campus Safety Officers are trained in first aid, CPR, and AED and are certified through the Virginia Department of Criminal Justice Services.

Security Network

Campus Safety works closely with the Staunton Police Department and Augusta County Sheriff’s Department, along with other local emergency service providers. Regardless of the situation, Campus Safety is ready to meet students’ emergency needs.

Safety Escorts

Campus Safety Officers offer free escorts across campus 24/7. Students who feel uncomfortable crossing campus can ask an officer on patrol or call Campus Safety for an escort. Do not hesitate to ask for an escort — that’s why our campus safety officers are here!

Campus Safety Resources

Mary Baldwin offers numerous on-campus resources to help keep students safe.

Siren Alert System
Our sirens provide clear warning sounds to alert students to imminent danger across campus. We test our sirens every month to ensure they’re always ready in case of emergency.

Emergency Call Boxes
Mary Baldwin has installed 22 emergency call boxes across the Staunton campus, including in each residential hall and large parking lot. Students can lift the telephone handset or press the red “Emergency Help” button to automatically contact Campus Safety.
