May Term Abroad
Take the MBU classroom abroad
May Term at MBU is a mini-term during the summer where students can take unique, accelerated courses, including three-week study abroad programs with MBU professors.
Whether you research tropical field biology in South Asia, or the history of African diaspora in Western Europe, these courses offer students hands-on learning experiences in cultures around the world.
This learning experience gave us access to history and culture in a way that cannot be done in a classroom.

Spend a semester or more around the globe
Virginia Program at Oxford
In partnership with five other Virginia colleges, MBU students can study English history and literature at St. Anne’s College of the University of Oxford.
Autism on the Seas
MBU students spend a week on a cruise ship providing support to individuals on the autism spectrum and their caregivers to earn course credit.
International Universities
Through exchange programs with international universities, MBU students can study abroad in India, Japan, Northern Ireland, South Korea, and Taiwan.
Third-Party Programs
MBU partners with independent providers like the Council on International Educational Exchange (CIEE) to allow MBU students to study abroad virtually anywhere in the world.

These scholarship funds are competitive and awarded to students with demonstrated financial need who meet one of the following criteria:
- Foreign language majors studying full-time abroad for a semester or a year (12 hours equivalent per semester)
- Students studying full-time with one of MBU’s international exchange partners.
- International studies majors with a language component requirement in their curriculum
- Foreign language minors participating in May Term abroad
- Majors may use May Term support to study abroad, but may not have support for both a May Term and a year abroad at another time

Inspired by her studies abroad in Italy as a young woman, alumna and donor Paula Stephens Lambert ’65 began this study abroad fund in 2015 to help MBU students achieve their dreams of international travel.
A grant of up to $10,000 is awarded to one student each year for studying abroad.

There are plenty of popular, third-party scholarships that help students all over the nation study abroad. Each of these scholarships is awarded based on different criteria, so read closely to determine which one is right for you.

FAQs
Government aid to study abroad is available for all students, including online and graduate programs. Students applying for aid to study abroad must complete the Application for Study Abroad Aid, which is available in the Financial Aid Office, and file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). If your program is not registered through Mary Baldwin University, your host institution must complete a consortium agreement with the university. Aid awards are based on demonstrated need.
Completed Application for Aid to Study Abroad forms are due to the Financial Aid Office by April 15 for the fall semester or full-year abroad, and Nov. 15 for the spring semester or May Term abroad.
