Staff/Senior Accountant
Description
Mary Baldwin University seeks a full-time Accountant (Staff or Senior, dependent upon qualifications), in the Office of Business & Finance. This is a full-time, exempt, administrative position with benefits.
The Accountant serves as a full-time accounting resource for the University under the supervision of the Controller. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, journal entries, bank account reconciliations, fixed assets, monthly closings and various year end audit and tax schedules. This position serves as the back up to the Controller and Accounts Payable Administrator as needed. This position has a high level of contact with MBU employees and outside inquiries. Critical thinking, time management and attention to detail are necessary skills for success.
Responsibilities
- Prepare timely reconciliations of the operating and all other bank accounts.
- Prepare year end schedules for audit field work and assist with financial statement preparation. Assist with annual tax schedules as needed for Form 990 submission.
- Maintain the fixed asset inventory and depreciation schedules in the Jenzabar ERP system. Review purchases for fixed asset additions. Process fixed asset disposals as needed. Perform physical fixed asset inventories.
- Ensure that month-end and year-end closings are performed on a consistent, efficient, timely and accurate basis in accordance with University policies and Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Ensure that all assigned general ledger accounts are reconciled, reviewed and fairly stated in accordance with University Policies and GAAP. Prepare monthly journal entries as needed.
- Prepare monthly journal entries and Virginia sales tax analysis on behalf of the University Campus Store. Remit payment to the state tax agency. Ensure University Campus Store cash receipts are deposited for the month with the cashier.
- Ensure PCI compliance is being followed at the University. Manage scheduling and assignments for hand-held devices for University Events.
- Provide backup duties for Accounts Payable Administrator and for Controller as needed.
- Perform necessary daily banking transactions as needed: Coding on miscellaneous checks, process weekly check run wire, Payroll and Accounts Payable ACHs and other items, as needed.
- Maintain the position’s digital files for Business Office documents on the shared drive.
- Manage life insurance annuity contracts given to the University as a donation.
- Assist with the creation of new general ledger accounts as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Successful completion of B.A. or B.S. degree in Accounting or related field.
- Three to five years experience working in a similar accounting environment.
- Strong knowledge of accounting principles applicable to private universities and/or proven ability to quickly adapt and learn.
- Proven knowledge of accounting and financial reporting information systems.
- Excellent personal computer skills, including working knowledge of Excel, Word and Google email functions.
- A strong orientation and commitment to work teams and positive work culture.
- Strong oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to balance the demands of strict deadlines and multiple tasks while working both independently and in groups.
- Ability to maintain confidentiality and guard sensitive information.
- CPA preferred
The Technical Services Manager reports to the Senior Director of Information Technology within the Office of Information Technology and works closely with other OIT staff, university departments, faculty, staff, students, and external vendors.
This is a twelve-month salaried, exempt, benefits eligible, onsite position located in Staunton, VA.
