A presentation on the topic “Ideal and Reality, Needs and Support → Mathematics Specialist Identity” at the Elementary Mathematics Specialists Research Conference, Waukesha, WI.

Matt Davies, assistant professor of Shakespeare and Performance and English

Guest artist for Radford University’s Theater Department to direct Twelfth Night at the Pridemore Theater, spring 2015.

Performed as Lavatch in All’s Well That Ends Well and Enobarbus in Antony and Cleopatra for the Virginia Shakespeare Festival, summer 2015, Williamsburg.

An article, “Chasing Antony’s Shadow,” on the experience of playing Mark Antony in Antony and Cleopatra for Chesapeake Shakespeare, the American Shakespeare Center’s Playhouse Insider.

Received a Best Actor in a Leading Role nomination for his role as Agamemnon in Deus ex Machina (which ran in December 2014) by the Austin Critics Table. The same play was recently nominated for an Innovation in Theater award by the B. Iden Payne committee.

Served as reviewer for FA Davis Publications,“Functional Performance in Older Adults, 4th edition.”

Served as an external reviewer for promotion and tenure candidate (professor) for Creighton University’s occupational therapy faculty, Omaha, NE.

Kai Kennedy, director of clinical education, physical therapy

A presentation with Lisa Shoaf, “Ready, Set, IPE: Implementing Meaningful Interprofessional Education in a DPT Program, the American Physical Therapy Association’s Educational Leadership Conference, September, Baltimore, MD; they shared their experiences in developing and implementing interprofessionalism in the Murphy Deming program curricula and providing a workshop to assist colleagues in developing similar IPE pedagogy.

Elected co-president of the Mid-Atlantic Consortium for Physical Therapy Education, which includes clinical faculty from Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC.

Roderic Owen, professor of philosophy

Presented a paper, “Beyond Bystander Status: Re-claiming Empathy and Engagement in the Face of Genocidal Violence,” at the conference “Why the Humanities: Answers from the Cognitive and Neurosciences,” July 9–11, Kent State University, Ohio.

An invited participant and discussion leader at a meeting focused on mass incarceration and the new Jim Crow, May 2015, Pendle Hill, the national Quaker retreat center.

Serving as an external examiner for a dissertation submitted to the Peace Studies Dept., Gandhi Institute of Madurai, India.

Brenci Patino, assistant professor of Spanish

Participated in a Mexican ballad-writing workshop, September 15, Library of Congress. U.S. Poet Laureate, Juan Felipe Herrera, was in attendance, and he wrote the English translation to the song written at the workshop, “The Ballad of Sandra Bland.” The song was performed later that day at Herrera’s inaugural poetry reading.

Attended the yearly summit of the Virginia Latino Higher Education Network, October 9, James Madison University.

Presented a paper, “To Build Anew with Science and Technology: Reconceiving the Construction Techniques of the Trenches of the Great War for an Utopian Future,” international meeting of the Society for the History of Technology, Albuquerque, NM.

Paul Ryan, professor of art

A visiting artist at the Department of Art & Art History at Washington & Lee University, September 23. He met individually with senior studio art majors, taught a painting class, and gave a public lecture about his work.

Sharon Spalding, director of athletics and wellness

Accepted a grant for $5,000 to begin a Beat Cancer Boot Camp here at Mary Baldwin — with future sites at Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences and Waynesboro Parks and Recreation — September 30.

Lois Williams, adjunct faculty member

Confirmed as an International Facilitation Fellow with the Charles A. Dana Center to deliver professional development to teachers who are part of the Department of Defense System, during a week in August in Okinawa, Japan, as part of a four-year project for Common Core Mathematics.
