First 2023 Hear & Now Concert

Mary Baldwin University is proud to partner with Staunton’s Heifetz Institute to present legendary violinist Ilya Kaler for 2023’s first “Hear & Now” concert at 2 p.m. on March 5 in Francis Auditorium.

The Russian-born master is one of the instrument’s most revered — and is the only player on the planet to win the international triumvirate of Russia’s Tchaikovsky Competition, Finland’s Sibelius Competition, and the Paganini Competition in Italy. He has been praised by countless critics from around the world, and was described by Gramophone magazine as a “magician bewitching our ears,” through his hauntingly beautiful tone, flawless command of the instrument, and mesmerizing phrasing.

Kaler is a distinguished professor of music at the famed Cleveland Institute of Music, and has performed with renowned orchestras like the Dresden Philharmonic Orchestra, Montreal Symphony, Danish and Berlin Radio Orchestras, Moscow and Zurich Chamber Orchestras, and most major American orchestras.

He will be joined at Mary Baldwin by members of Heifetz’s Ensemble in Residence, and give a talk prior to performing.

Concert admission is free for Mary Baldwin students, faculty, and staff with advance reservations and a valid student or employee ID. Tickets are $25 for the general public; $5 for non-MBU students; free for children 12 and under. All tickets must be reserved or purchased in advance online.
