Global IT Outage Affecting MBU Operations

Updated 4:15 p.m. EST on 7/19

The MBU network has been affected by today’s global technology outage, which is disrupting operations for airlines, banks, government institutions, businesses, and numerous other organizations that use Microsoft Windows systems. It’s currently not known when these Microsoft-based systems will be up and running again.

The source of the outage is a faulty update from cyber-security firm CrowdStrike, which provides protections for tens of thousands of customers, including MBU.

MBU’s Office of Information Technology (OIT) is working on mitigating the impact of this disruption on university technology, but it’s affecting different systems in different ways. Some may remain functional, while others aren’t accessible. Whether a program is functional may also depend on external providers that work with OIT to offer MBU services.

Timely information concerning specific groups within the MBU community is included below.

Please reach out to your program director or supervisor with questions or concerns. The university will work toward solutions and will update students, faculty, and staff with timely information as needed. The university will also plan to update the entire community on the situation by noon Monday.

Login to MyMBU has been partially restored though some services may still be unavailable. In the event that you are unable to access MyMBU and need to reach MBU Canvas, you may access it directly through this link

Faculty/Staff

If the MBU network is unavailable, you can work from home to access the internet. Please be in touch with your supervisor.

Human Resources has been able to process hourly payroll today, so calculating and delivering employee pay will not be affected. Local 911 systems, our fire panel, and key card access are all unaffected by the outage.

OIT is working to issue a patch to MBU-issued computers that were affected by the faulty update from CrowdStrike. OIT staff will be in touch with next steps as they work across the university with a priority on emergency communication and student services.
