Why pursue an MAT in Special Education at Mary Baldwin?

At MBU, we believe every student deserves a teacher who sees their potential — and knows how to unlock it. Our MAT in Special Education: General Curriculum (K–12) prepares you to become that teacher, with an emphasis on evidence-based practices, inclusive learning, and student advocacy. Whether you’re just starting your journey in education or making a career change, our program supports your path to licensure and leadership.

Flexibility & Convenience
With all courses available online, you can complete coursework on your schedule and student-teach in any accredited classroom. Some of our students complete the entire program in just two years, while others choose to pursue the MAT part-time, balancing it with their careers and home life. We’re here to make a career in teaching work for you!

MAT students don’t need to be Commonwealth of Virginia residents to seek licensure. They can complete practicums and student-teaching in any accredited school. However, all activities, competencies, and Standards of Learning that are addressed in each experience must apply to Commonwealth of Virginia guidelines.

Although you can never be 100% prepared for your first day of teaching, I felt as though MBU gave me the experience I needed to feel confident and ready.
