Full Time Sports Information Director
Mary Baldwin University (MBU) seeks a Sports Information Director (SID), who reports directly to the Director of Athletics.
Located in Staunton, Va., Mary Baldwin recently transitioned from college to university status, reflecting its growing range of bachelor’s, master level, and doctoral programs. MBU is a very diverse entrepreneurial institution with a record of innovation aspiring to meet the evolving higher education needs of society.
The SID leads the strategic communication efforts for the college’s athletic department. This role is responsible for promoting and enhancing the visibility of all varsity and club athletic programs through creative storytelling, media relations, digital content, and game-day operations. The SID collaborates across departments to ensure a consistent and integrated message that supports the college’s mission and athletic objectives.
Primary responsibilities include:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications plan for the athletics department that aligns with the College’s communication philosophy.
- Write, edit, and distribute press releases, feature stories, game previews/recaps, and social media content.
- Serve as the primary media contact for all varsity sports and coordinate interview requests with coaches and student-athletes.
- Ensure alignment of athletics messaging with the College’s brand identity and messaging strategy through collaboration with the Office of Integrated Communication (OIC).
- Manage communication and promotional efforts for the Athletics Hall of Fame and serve on the HOF Board.
- Maintain and regularly update the official athletics website in collaboration with the college’s web team and coaching staff.
- Oversee the creation and distribution of digital game-day programs, including using QR code access for all sports.
- Manage the athletics department’s presence across multiple social media platforms, ensuring timely and engaging content.
- Produce high-quality live video and audio streams for home athletic events.
- Coordinate and manage media operations and staffing for approximately 100 home athletic events each academic year.
- Provide real-time statistical coverage and game reporting using NCAA and USA South Athletic Conference-approved scoring software.
- Ensure quality event presentation and live coverage that reflects positively on the college and its athletics programs.
- Hire, train, mentor and supervise student workers and sports information staff.
- Coordinate athletics-related communications to internal and external audiences, including alumni, prospective students, parents, local media, and the campus community.
- Manage special events and related media logistics as needed.
- Facilitate the use of internal and external vendors and technology to support communication goals.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Athletics.
Minimum Qualifications: Bachelor’s degree and collegiate SID experience. Knowledge of and commitment to NCAA Division III rules. Valid driver’s license and ability to establish driver eligibility under the University’s Driving and Motor Vehicle Policy. The successful candidate must pass all required background and reference checks.
Preferred Qualifications: Master’s degree. Previous history of relationship-building and cultivation of former student-athletes and other program stakeholders.
