Messages to the Mary Baldwin Community
In Memory of Dr. Cynthia Haldenby Tyson, MBU’s Eighth President
January 8, 2024
I am saddened to share the news that Dr. Cynthia Haldenby Tyson, MBU’s eighth president, passed away yesterday in Charlotte, N.C. Our condolences go out to Dr. Tyson’s two children, Alexandra and Marcus, and all of her family, friends, and former colleagues and students.
Dr. Tyson led Mary Baldwin from 1985 to 2003, and forged a legacy of expansion for signature academic programs and the campus footprint. Throughout her 18 years, she created partnerships, constructed and renovated campus buildings, enlarged and diversified the student body, set fundraising records, and drew national publicity.

As I look to the summit of our campus this week, I am reminded of the statement, “Bridges don’t fall from the sky; we have to build them,” written by Eboo Patel, Founder and President of Interfaith America.

First Day in Office Greetings
July 1, 2023
I am honored to begin this new chapter with you and serve as Mary Baldwin University’s 10th President. For 181 years, this institution has stood as a beacon of opportunity and possibility, unafraid to support the disenfranchised or to evolve in the face of historic challenges. I’m deeply inspired by MBU’s legacy of innovation and academic excellence — but most importantly, by the spirit, dedication, and passion of this community of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends.
