An Echols/Rodman scholar, Mike received his Bachelor of Science degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Virginia. He is the President of Matthews Development Company LLC (MDC), based in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was established in 1999 to provide the highest quality professional real estate consulting and development services on its own account and to select clients nationwide. Their typical engagements are complex, high-profile facilities for mission-focused clients that require an understanding of the full range of financial, political, technical, and regulatory issues surrounding a development and construction program.

Mike was the general manager for the entire build of Murphy Deming College of Health Sciences. Other projects include Martha Jefferson Hospital, Monticello Visitors Center, The Thomas Jefferson Foundation’s restoration of Montalto, the Jefferson Scholars Graduate Fellows Center at the University of Virginia, Westerminister Canterbury of the Blue Ridge, and many others nationwide.

In addition to his professional contributions, Mike has also served in a variety of civic roles: on the Charlottesville/Albemarle Airport Authority, Charlottesville /Albemarle Airport Commission, Central Virginia American Red Cross, Albemarle Housing Improvement Program, Jordan Development Corporation, a nonprofit for affordable housing, as well as many others.
