Students majoring in other subjects that want to study Special Education should consider the Special Education minor. This path does not prepare students for all teaching licensure requirements in Special Education.

Students in this program don’t need to be Commonwealth of Virginia residents to seek licensure—they can complete practicums in any accredited school. However, all activities, competencies, and Standards of Learning that are addressed in each experience must apply to Commonwealth of Virginia guidelines.

Teacher Education Program
Students declaring this major with a 2.5 GPA or better must apply to MBU’s Teacher Education Program (TEP) if they are seeking licensure. Upon completion of their degree program and TEP requirements, students will be prepared to obtain a teaching license by Commonwealth of Virginia standards.

Learn to Take the Lead
Our special education bachelor’s program empowers future educators to take leadership roles in their schools. We combine theory and practice for an integrated approach to educating exceptional students. At MBU, you will learn to teach, lead, and collaborate with confidence.

120 credit hours are required for a bachelor’s degree.
Special Education Add-On
Students not majoring in Special Education (BA) can take a lessened course-load in the program to earn a Special Education General Curriculum add-on at the K-6, 6-8, or 6-12 levels. Students must have or be concurrently pursuing initial licensure at the respective grade levels of their add-on.
Undergraduates obtaining an initial license in a subject other than Special Education may obtain a Special Education add-on at the K-6, 6-8, or 6-12 levels through a reduced course-load. This add-on will be granted as soon as an initial license in that respective grade level is obtained.
