The Exercise and Sports Management minor teaches the fundamental entrepreneurial skills to tackle the growing sports and exercise industry. This minor empowers students to enter fields like sports administration, athletics promotion and organization, or fitness and
exercise industries. The minor also complements Exercise Science and Health Fitness Specialist majors by enhancing student’s knowledge of important aspects of business, communication, and management.

Exercise has become a major worldwide industry that is constantly evolving. From digitally streamed and marketed sports entertainment to the growing interest in specialty gyms and fitness influencers, MBU will prepare you with the business and organizational tools to compete in these ever-changing industries.
In the Exercise and Sports Management minor, you’ll learn the practical, fundamental components of sports and fitness management, such as:
- Event and facility management
- Marketing, fundraising, and public relations

- Sports law and ethical practice
MBU also offers a number of unique, hands-on opportunities for Exercise and Sports Management minors. Students can manage Fighting Squirrels sports teams to get real-world experience in sports promotion and organization. They can also intern as assistants to athletic trainers at the Physical Activities Center to learn the logistics of fitness facilities management.

MBU’s Exercise and Sports Management curriculum draws on Business courses in organizational management and principles. The minor also involves specialty courses specifically on the topic of sports and fitness management as a career.
Sample Courses
This course introduces the basic principles of marketing, including marketing strategy, marketing communication, and the interaction between organizations and consumers. Emphasis will be on economic, social, cultural, and legal environments in which marketing occurs. Students gain understanding of traditional marketing concepts and current marketing thought, and practical experience through analytical and creative projects.
This course gives students in the minor the opportunity to synthesize and reflect on business fundamentals as they relate to sports management. It introduces the student to sports management career opportunities and to sports principles as they apply to management, leadership style, communication, motivation, and entrepreneurship. Students will have the opportunity to examine the fundamental components of sports management through research, investigating such topics as: personnel issues, event and facility management, marketing, promotions, leadership, budgeting, fundraising, ethics, sport law and public relations.
